The Meaning of Chakra Colors

chakra-colors-and-locationsWhat are the chakra colors and what do they mean? Exploring the 7 chakra colors in more detail unveils the meaning of each. This can help those that are aware and willing to use this information to put it to their benefit. Having an understanding of the chakra colors and their meaning can open up the mystery of the energy system and help each person to understand themselves on a deeper level. Many individuals see themselves only on a superficial level, identifying with material and physical forms but completely ignoring the mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of their being. Living in this way throws the person out of balance as each aspect compliments the other. In order to live peaceful, happy and harmonious lives, each level must be acknowledged and cared for. When only one or two elements of their being are acknowledged, it throws the whole system off balance, similar to the earth’s ecosystem when mistreated or uncared for. Each part of their being must be acknowledged, treated with respect, and looked after, in order to maintain a healthy balance and promote vitality.

Chakra Color Chart

There are seven major chakras or energy centers of the body, each with differing functions and attributes. There are also seven chakra colors attributed to the chakras, each with its own significance and meaning. Ok, but what are the colors of the chakras? The chakra colors are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. The chakra color chart below will give you a quick overview of what each of them mean.

The Colors of the Chakras

Let us now find out more about each of the 7 chakra colors and symbols (see pictures). As you learn more about the colors of chakras and their individual functions, it can actually help you to see what part of you that may need some healing.

1. Root Chakra Color

root-chakra-red-250x250

The root chakra color is red and is connected to the adrenal glands. Associated body parts include the hips and legs, and the organs related to this chakra are the bladder and kidneys. Red is the deepest and lowest frequency of the chakra color spectrum. At an emotional level, red is identified as being the color of passion, anger and rage, danger or red alert, heat and energy. For example, when someone has been exercising or exerting themselves, often their cheeks become flushed due to excess heat and blood flow. Often those that identify with these emotions and/or wear red, are people who are strongly connected to their physical form – and as mentioned above – often neglect other elements of their nature such as their emotional and spiritual side.

The root chakra and the color red are also connected to the instinctive fight or flight reaction when people feel that they might be in danger. This response comes from a time when humans needed to defend and protect themselves from harm such as predatory animals. This response served well as protection, injecting large doses of adrenalin and cortisol into the body, allowing bursts of energy to run or fight if needed, hence the name “fight or flight”. Today, for most people this danger is no longer present and the response is somewhat defunct. However, it is still active and can cause havoc with the body. When under stress at work or if watching a thrilling movie, the fight or flight response can become active. Unless the stress hormones are used up through physical exertion, they remain in the body and build up over time, leading to disorders of the nervous system, hormonal imbalance, and illness.

When the root chakra is balanced and operating in harmony, energy becomes more grounded. Emotions such as anger and instinctive responses such as fight or flight, are less active. The result being a person that is better able to relax, is not controlled by their emotions and feels at peace.

2. Sacral Chakra Color

sacral-chakra-color

The sacral chakra color is orange and is closely related to red in frequency but operates at a higher vibration. Orange is the color of the sun and warmth; it is expressive and creative and exudes energy and strength. Associated glands include the ovaries and testes and the organs related to this chakra include the reproductive system and lower intestines.

Emotionally, orange is identified with happiness, vitality, joy, wisdom and creativity. It is also associated with gut instinct. Connecting and feeding the energy from this chakra up through the solar plexus chakra to the heart chakra allows the interaction of gut feelings with heart-based desires. This is important as most people operate on a mental level of thinking, ignoring the wisdom of their gut and the direction of their heart. This is why many people feel lost and isolated. When the orange energy of the sacral chakra is flowing, it allows for creative ideas to emerge, clear direction and fulfillment of life purpose.

3. Solar Plexus Chakra Color

Yellow is the solar plexus chakra color and while it still maintains the warm tones of red and orange, the lighter energy of yellow brings with it clarity, knowledge and power. On a physical level the yellow of the solar plexus relates to the pancreas, digestive system, lower back and muscles. Emotionally, yellow evokes feelings of optimism, good humor, confidence and positive self-esteem. When the energy in this chakra is stuck or stagnated, negative traits such as pessimism, competitiveness, selfishness and feeling unworthy can come about. As the solar plexus is also the junction between the lower grounded chakras and the upper emotional and spiritual chakras, blockages in this chakra can lead to a disconnect between the physical and spiritual nature. Over dependence of either the lower chakras or overuse of the upper chakras brings feelings of disconnect and an inability to be fully present in the now.

4. Heart Chakra Color

The predominant heart chakra color is green but it is sometimes also associated with the color pink. Green is the color of nature, growth, vitality and balance, while pink is the color of love, joy, new beginnings and serenity. The two colors while operating at differing frequencies, work in harmony to create a balanced, complete and loving heart chakra. The physical aspects of the heart chakra include the thymus gland, heart, lungs, shoulders, arms and chest. At an emotional level, a balanced, flowing heart chakra promotes feelings of love, peace, happiness, empathy and compassion. When the energy in this area falters or becomes blocked, feelings of jealousy, resentment, lack and loneliness can emerge. The green color and pink association of the heart chakra when flowing freely, opens the doorway to divine light and love.

5. Throat Chakra Color

The throat chakra color is a wonderful shade of turquoise blue. Blue signifies the sky, openness, fresh air and liberation. The physical aspects of the throat chakra are the thyroid gland, neck, throat and ears. The throat chakra is the energy center that connects the heart and the third eye. When operating in harmony, the hearts desires are voiced and expressed through an open throat chakra, while the intuitive prompts of the third eye are fed through the throat to an open and welcoming heart and then expressed through the throat. In this way an individuals true hearts desires can be reflected and actioned through their thoughts, deeds and words. While the throat chakra is best known for communication, the spiritual role of this chakra is divine expression and being true to oneself.

6. Third Eye Chakra Color

The third eye chakra color is represented as a deep shade of indigo, however the color purple is also associated with this chakra. Both indigo and purple reflect mystery, wisdom, knowledge, prosperity and spirituality. At a physical level the third eye relates to the pituitary gland, eyes, sinuses and brain. This chakra is the seat of inner knowing or intuition, understanding – both spiritual and practical understanding, and connection – inner connectedness and connection with the whole. An out of balance third eye chakra reveals stubbornness, self-importance, pride, overconfidence and disconnect from ones inner knowing and from others.

7. Crown Chakra Color

The crown chakra color is violet or in some cases pure white. Violet connects the physical to the spiritual; it equates wisdom and divine power. White reflects the purity of spirit, the brilliance of pure light and clarity. This is often one of the final chakras to fully open or activate and remains dormant in many who operate solely from their lower chakras and identify only with the material world. When accessed, the crown chakra brings transformation, belonging, connection to the whole and release from the notion of duality. From a physical perspective the crown chakra is related to the pineal gland, cerebral cortex and the brain. The gifts that a open and functioning crown chakra offer include a sense of oneness, peace, and of being whole or complete. There is no need to strive or struggle as everything that is needed lies within.

The 7 Chakras – Colors of the Rainbow!

As described above, the main colors associated with chakras include red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. This means that the 7 chakra colors are the same as the seven colors of the rainbow! For those who can see an aura, it is just as beautiful as the rainbow. The beauty of the rainbow as it arches through the sky has been spoken of and written about over the ages.

“Gratitude is the real treasure God wants us to find, because it isn’t the pot of gold but the rainbow that colors our world.” ― Richelle E. Goodrich

Why is it that the beauty of the rainbow resonates with those that pause to look upon it? There is something in the beauty of the colors that is reflected in each person. An individual that appreciates the colors of the rainbow appreciate the beauty within themselves. The magic of the fleeting vision of the color spectrum hanging momentarily in the sky deserves to be valued. This is reflected in the chakra color spectrum that each person holds. Everyone holds within them the colors of the rainbow, residing at an unseen level within their energy field. In a sense, each person longs to see what they know to be true, the beauty of the colors that make up their being. If every individual could see each other’s rainbow of chakra colors when they meet, would they then treat each other differently?

As with the rainbow, the color of the first chakra – the base chakra – is red, followed by orange of the sacral chakra, and yellow of the solar plexus chakra. These first three chakra colors make up the lower tones or color frequencies. Red, orange and yellow evoke thoughts of nature and the fall when the leaves are changing color. During this time, even though nature is preparing for slumber, the beauty of the changing colors is magnificent.

“Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.” ― Albert Camus

In this way, the lower chakra colors reflect the connection to nature, the grounding energy of Mother Earth and the power and wisdom that lies within.

The upper chakra colors represent the lighter color waves of green and pink within the heart chakra, blue at the throat chakra, indigo or purple within the third eye chakra and finally purple or white at the crown chakra. These lighter colors evoke thoughts of leaves and flowers blooming, new beginnings, healing, expression, awareness and feelings of love, joy, peace and vitality.

How to Energize the Chakra Colors!

Having looked deeper into the seven chakra colors and their meaning, it is time to discover how to care for and nurture the positive aspects of the chakras and the energy system as a whole. Chakra color therapy helps to re-attune and realign the chakras to their optimal frequency and restore their function and balance. As mentioned previously, each of the colors of the chakras operates on different frequencies. If the chakra is blocked or misaligned, the color frequency also changes, often becoming slower and thus dulling the color and vibration of the energy center. In order to restore the color frequency and therefore the energy of the chakra, using the chakra color chart and color therapy can yield enormous benefit. Chakra color therapy can be employed through meditation, color breathing, chakra stones or crystals and even through the colors worn on the body or used to decorate the home and through food that is eaten.

These crystals vibrate at specific frequencies and using the crystal colors associated with the chakras is a very effective way to clear and energize the chakras. Chakra stones are readily available to buy and can be used at home or by therapists during energy healing or massage. Using crystals in conjunction with energy healing such as Reiki can complement and enhance the treatment.

Meditation

Using color during meditation is as simple as seeing chakra colors within the energy field, for example, concentrating on a specific color and seeing it enveloping the body. Whatever color that pops to mind is usually the most apt for the individual and is what they most need at that point in time. The color needed can change from day to day and even from minute to minute depending on mood, environment and mental state.

Color Breathing

This is a very effective way to reenergize and balance the chakras. The color of the chakras is envisioned as being breathed into the body on the in-breath and releasing any grey or dark colors and energy on the outbreath. Starting with red at the root chakra and breathing the appropriate colors into each of the seven major chakras in succession until reaching the crown chakra.

Food

chakra-color-therapy-foodIt is known that root vegetables such as potatoes, carrots and beetroot, when eaten, help to ground the chakras and energy system. It is not surprising that many of these root vegetables also reflect the colors of the lower chakras. The colors of foods eaten not only provide nutrients for the body but also serve to enhance the function of the chakras. It is important therefore to eat and drink a wide variety of natural fruit and vegetables of varying colors. It goes without saying however, that consuming artificial colors such as coloring added to processed foods, does not serve the same purpose and can have a detrimental affect on both energy levels and health.

Clothing and Decoration

Wearing specific colors is known to enhance mood and attitude. However, the opposite can also be true, for example, if a person has an overactive root chakra and is prone to wearing red, this can exacerbate the issue. Clothing colors can be used to harmonize the chakras but too much of one color can be overwhelming energetically. Similarly, the colors of the chakra system can be used in the home and incorporated into particular rooms to enhance the desired mood in that area. Subtle tones of purple and blue can be used in bedrooms to promote a calming atmosphere, while more vibrant colors of orange and red can be added in moderation to living spaces to warm and energize the room.
